Gene Hackman, Oscar-winning star of ‘Hoosiers’ and ‘Unforgiven,’ dies at 95

Gene Hackman, the prolific and versatile two-time Oscar-winning actor whose career spanned five decades, has died at 95.

He and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home Wednesday afternoon, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said. Universally lauded for his acting skill, Hackman’s everyman quality enabled him to embody a broad range of characters in multiple genres — from the preening, comical villain Lex Luthor opposite Christopher Reeve in 1978’s “Superman,” to a disgraced high school basketball coach looking for redemption in the 1986 drama “Hoosiers,” to an ultra-conservative senator forced to dress in drag to escape the paparazzi in the 1996 Robin Williams comedy “The Birdcage.”

Yet Hackman particularly excelled in roles that featured him playing flawed authority figures, performances lent extra gravitas by his craggy features, which could morph from pathos to bemusement to menace with a twitch, and his and physically imposing six-feet, two-inch frame. He won his first Academy Award for his role as the dogged New York City police Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in 1971’s “The French Connection,” and his second twenty years later playing corrupt Sheriff “Little Bill” Daggett in director Clint Eastwood’s 1992 Western, “Unforgiven.”

Other standout roles include a conflicted surveillance expert in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 suspense thriller “The Conversation”; a hardened FBI agent who pushes ethical boundaries while investigating the murders of three civil rights workers in the 1988 drama “Mississippi Burning”; and Captain Frank Ramsey, the rigid nuclear submarine commander in 1995’s “Crimson Tide,” opposite Denzel Washington.

Hackman spent his retirement writing novels, including a Western, a police thriller and three works of historical fiction. He made few public appearances, preferring instead to spend time at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico with his wife, Betsy Arakawa. In 2008, he popped up in an episode of the Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” as a regular customer of a Santa Fe restaurant featured on the program.

Asked by GQ in that same 2011 interview how he’d like to be remembered, Hackman’s response was simple.

“As a decent actor,” he said. “As someone who tried to portray what was given to them in an honest fashion. I don’t know, beyond that. I don’t think about that often, to be honest. I’m at an age where I should think about it.”

Hackman was married twice, the first time for 30 years to Faye Maltese, with whom he had three children and whom he divorced in 1986. He married Arakawa, a classical pianist 30 years his junior, in 1991.

Trump’s comments on Canada prompt surge of patriotism – in a Canadian way

A lone figure takes to the stage, a giant maple leaf flag rippling on a screen behind him as he gingerly approaches the microphone.

“I’m not a lumberjack, or a fur trader,” he tells the crowd. “I have a prime minister, not a president. I speak English and French, not American. And I pronounce it ‘about’ – not ‘a boot’.”

The crowd, indifferent at first, grows increasingly enthusiastic as the man works his way through a catalogue of Canadian stereotypes, passing from diffidence to defiance before the climactic cry: “Canada is the second largest landmass! The first nation of hockey! And the best part of North America! My name is Joe! And I am Canadian!”

The ad, for Molson Canadian beer, was immensely popular when it aired in 2000. And now, with Canada’s identity and sovereignty under threat, it has roared back into the public consciousness.

In recent weeks, Canadian patriotism has surged in response to Donald Trump’s suggestion that the US could annex its northern neighbour. His threats have prompted an outpouring of disbelief and defiance, but – in a very Canadian way – they has also revived questions over the complexities of national identity.

Trump began his campaign of diplomatic trolling before he had even assumed office, questioning Canada’s viability as a nation, suggesting that it could become the 51st American state, and deriding the prime minister, Justin Trudeau, as a “governor”

In response, Canadians have taken to acts of patriotism, small and large: one pilot flew his small plane in the shape of a maple leaf; sports fans have booed US teams; hats insisting “Canada is not for sale” have gone viral; consumers have pledged to buy only Canadian-made products – a pledge skewered in a viral sketch in which one shopper berates another for buying American ketchup.

Related: Canada’s Liberal party was left for dead, but Trump might have just given it a second chance

“What the hell are you doing?” he asked “We’re in a trade war, you traitor!”

“It’s been absolutely crazy and overwhelming,” said Dylan Lobo, who runs MadeInCa, a website that catalogues products made in-country. “We’re struggling to keep up with all the listings. People are really frustrated and they want to find a way to support Canadian and buy Canadian.”

Politicians, aware of a looming election, have wrapped themselves in the flag. And in a show of bipartisan unity, five former prime ministers have called for Canadian unity.

Naya Rivera’s Ex Shares Her Final Moments Recalled by Their Son

Naya Rivera’s ex Ryan Dorsey is sharing details about the Glee star’s final moments before she died in 2020.

In his first sit-down interview since Rivera’s death, the actor opened up to People magazine about how their son Josey, now 9, continues to hold guilt over not being able to save the actress, who drowned while she and her then 4-year-old son were swimming in Lake Piru in Ventura County, California.

“Something he’s said over and over is that he was trying to find a life raft, and there was a rope, but there was a big spider on the rope, and he was too scared to throw it,” Dorsey said. “I keep reassuring him, ‘Buddy, that rope wasn’t going to be long enough.’”

Josey also revealed that because it was windy that day, he was worried about getting into the water. But Rivera assured him and told him, “Don’t be silly!”

When Rivera noticed the boat began drifting, given it wasn’t equipped with an anchor or flotation devices — a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of Josey against Ventura County was settled in 2022 — she instructed her son to swim back to the boat.

According to Dorsey, the 9-year-old remembers swimming back to “the tanks” and pulling himself “around the boat.” (The incident report said Rivera exhausted herself getting Josey back on the boat and drowned.)

“He said that the last thing she said was his name, and then she went under, and he didn’t see her anymore,” Dorsey said. “It just rocks my world that he had to witness her last moments.”

Rivera, who played Santana Lopez on the Fox musical series Glee, was declared dead at the age of 33 after her body was found five days later.

The late star had rented a boat and went for an excursion with her son on July 8, 2020. When the rental boat wasn’t returned at the deadline, employees operating the rental stand went out to look for them, and that’s when they found her son alone in the boat. Authorities initiated a search for Rivera led by a team of divers believing she drowned in a “tragic accident.”

Rivera’s son was reported to be unharmed. He also reportedly told investigators that he and his mother had been swimming in the lake, and though he got back in the boat, she did not.

Dorsey also revealed that he was in a Ralph’s supermarket in Big Bear Lake, California, when he learned Rivera was missing after being called by Rivera’s family. “I collapsed into a pallet of drinks,” Dorsey said. “I feared the worst.”

He also said that while driving to Lake Piru he, “drove 100-and-something the whole way with my four-way hazards on, chain-smoking cigarettes — and I don’t even smoke, really — and just crying.

“I just wanted to get to Josey,” he said. “If we’d have lost both Naya and Josey, I don’t know how I would continue on with my life. I don’t know what I would’ve done, but I’m sure it wouldn’t have been good.”

In one of her last social media posts shared days before her death, Rivera posted a photo of herself and Josey writing, “Just the two of us.”

DC plane crash live updates: Figure skaters, coaches aboard flight that crashed

Former DHS Secretary Alejandro Maykorkas was on a separate American Airlines flight that was turned around because of the DC plane collision. Fox News’ Lucas Tomlinson reports on this and more on ‘Fox & Friends Firs.https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/article/mayorkas-on-separate-american-airlines-flight-that-was-turned-around-fox-news-learns/vi-AA1y6PPE?ocid=socialshare&pc=U531&cvid=c25e2a721efc49ddf57c21823c98bb29&ei=28

An American Airlines regional jet went down in the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after colliding with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, Wednesday night, prompting a multi-agency search-and-rescue operation, according to officials.

The Federal Aviation Administration said preliminary information indicates a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with the helicopter while on approach to the airport around 9 p.m. local time.

2 Russian figure skaters on board plane that crashed

Russian media reported that two Russian figure skaters were on board the American Airlines flight that collided with an Army helicopter outside D.C. and a presidential spokesman expressed condolences to the families and friends of those killed in the plane crash.

“There were other of our fellow citizens there. Bad news from Washington today,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday morning.

Earlier, several Russian state media outlets reported that the 1994 world figure skating champions in pairs, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, were on board the plane, though U.S. authorities have not confirmed these reports.

Figure skaters, coaches among passengers aboard jet that collided with helicopter over DC

Figure skaters and coaches returning from the national championships were aboard the American Airlines flight that collided with a Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport on Wednesday, the U.S. Figure Skating organization confirmed.

“U.S. Figure Skating can confirm that several members of our skating community were sadly aboard American Airlines Flight 5342, which collided with a helicopter yesterday evening in Washington, D.C.” the organization said in a statement. “These athletes, coaches, and family members were returning home from the National Development Camp held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.

19 aircraft diverted from Reagan National Airport after crash

Some 19 aircraft that were in the air and due to land at Reagan National Airport had to be diverted after the mid-air collision of a regional American Airlines jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter, according to an airports official

The diverted flights landed at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, said Jack Potter, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, who spoke at an early Thursday morning press briefing.

Reagan National will be closed until at least 11 a.m. Thursday, but the situation is fluid, Potter said

Hegseth says Army, Pentagon have launched investigation

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said an immediate investigation has been launched after the mid-air collision of an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport on Wednesday.

“Absolutely tragic,” Hegseth posted on X. “Search and rescue efforts still ongoing. Prayers for all impacted souls, and their families.”

Trump weighs in on crash

President Donald Trump released a statement on social media about the jet-helicopter crash over the Potomac River seeming to question the actions of the helicopter pilots and Air Traffic Control.

“It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn,” Trump posted on his platform Truth Social. “Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!”

According to radio traffic, Air Traffic Control at the airport advised the helicopter of the plane’s approach and asked the helicopter pilots to confirm they had the plane in sight, which is standard procedure.

Investigators will work to understand what went wrong.

Kansas senator describes ‘unbearable sorrow’

In somber remarks at a news conference early Thursday morning, Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall suggested he feared the passengers and crew aboard a regional American Airlines jet and a Black Hawk helicopter that collided were lost.

“When one person dies, it’s a tragedy,” Marshall said. “But when many, many, many people die, it’s an unbearable sorrow … It’s really hard when you lose, you know, probably over 60 Kansans, simultaneously.”

Speaking of the pilots, flight attendants and military personnel, Marshall added, “All those lives are so valuable, and it is such a tragedy that we lost them.”

Lady Gaga responds to Razzie-nominated film’s box office flop

Lady Gaga has spoken out about the critical and commercial response to last year’s Joker: Folie à Deux.

The musician and actor, 38, appeared in Todd Phillips’s comic book sequel as Harleen Quinzel, the love interest of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck.

The film divided critics. While some praised the film, including The Independent’s Geoffrey McNab who awarded it four stars, it was largely panned and currently has a score of just 31% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Joker: Folie à Deux is one of the most-nominated films at this year’s 2025 Golden Raspberry Awards, known as the Razzies, an award show that claims to salute the year’s biggest cinematic failures.

The film has six nominations in total, level with BorderlandsMadame WebMegalopolis and Reagan, which are all up for the Worst Picture award.

Gaga is nominated in the Worst Actress category, Phoenix for Worst Actor and Phillips for Worst Director.

Meanwhile, Gaga is switching her focus back to music. She recently announced the forthcoming release of her seventh studio album Mayhem, which is due to arrive on March 7.

According to a press announcement, “Mayhem reinvents her early sound with a kaleidoscopic approach that draws from her expansive musical library while embracing a fresh and fearless artistic perspective.”

Her last album Harlequin was a companion album for Joker: Folie à Deux that climbed no higher than No. 20 on the Billboard 200.

It also failed to perform at the box office, earning just $207 million worldwide against an estimated $200 million budget. Industry analysts have calculated that studio Warner Bros. likely lost between $150 million and $200 million on the film’s theatrical run.

Gaga also is set to join artists including Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell at the FireAid benefit on Thursday (January 30), which aims to raise money for the people and communities devastated by the recent devastating fires in Los Angeles.

An official statement says that funds raised by the concerts “will be distributed for short-term relief efforts and long-term initiatives to prevent future fire disasters throughout California.”

Jennifer Aniston admitted it: Megyn Kelly on separation rumors about Obamas

A wave of rumours surrounding former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama has taken social media by storm, fueled by discussions of a possible separation and an alleged connection between Barack Obama and actress Jennifer Aniston. Amid this, Megyn Kelly, host of The Megyn Kelly Show, addressed the rumors and said “it would be a political earthquake” if it were true.

Kelly’s social media posts on X and Instagram rapidly spread, drawing attention to the potential consequences of such a separation. “I don’t know whether it is true,” she said, “but if it is, it truly would be a political earthquake in Democratic circles, never mind America.” In her video, Kelly further emphasised the rarity of presidential divorces, saying ”I don’t remember a presidential divorce in modern history.”

Viral post links Barack Obama and Jennifer Aniston

A post on X has added fuel to the fire, claiming that Jennifer Aniston is romantically involved with Barack Obama. The post alleged that a friend of Aniston revealed the relationship during a casual conversation at a gathering. “He’s with Jennifer Aniston. My old manager, now a friend, is connected to her inner circle. At a gathering with Jennifer’s friends, the affair came up casually — Jennifer herself admitted it. They were sitting with a psychic, which makes it sound surreal, but it’s definitely not a secret among her closest friends,” the message read.https://x.com/CollinRugg/status/1882584363621114271?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1882584363621114271%7Ctwgr%5E376e33dc52ec2436b180b07a2ffdc06dea8e90d2%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftimesofindia.indiatimes.com%2Fworld%2Fus%2Fjennifer-aniston-admitted-it-megyn-kelly-on-separation-rumours-about-obamas%2Farticleshow%2F117508318.cms

Michelle Obama’s absence fuels speculation

The rumours of a split gained traction when Michelle Obama was noticeably absent from key events, including the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.

Michelle’s team later clarified that she was on an extended vacation in Hawaii during the Carter funeral. However, reports suggesting that she has distanced herself from Washington, life and spends little time with Barack have added to the speculation. No official word yet

As the rumours continue to swirl, neither Barack nor Michelle Obama has commented publicly on the matter. Similarly, Jennifer Aniston has not addressed the latest claims.https://x.com/realmelanieking/status/1882496853859782957?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1882496853859782957%7Ctwgr%5E376e33dc52ec2436b180b07a2ffdc06dea8e90d2%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftimesofindia.indiatimes.com%2Fworld%2Fus%2Fjennifer-aniston-admitted-it-megyn-kelly-on-separation-rumours-about-obamas%2Farticleshow%2F117508318.cms

Grimes says she’s ‘happy to denounce Nazi-ism’ after ex Elon Musk’s salute controversy

Grimes has said she’s “happy to denounce Nazi-ism” after her former partner Elon Musk was accused of giving a “Nazi salute” during an inauguration celebration for Donald Trump.

The world’s richest man was hit with a wave of immediate outrage online after he made a salute that many felt resembled the infamous Nazi gesture during his speech at the Capitol One Arena on Monday (January 20).

That outrage extended to his former partner Grimes. The Canadian musician, 36, shares three children with the 53-year-old Tesla and SpaceX CEO.

On Musk’s social media platform, X, one fan wrote that she was preparing to unfollow Grimes and cover up a tribute tattoo because of the incident.

In a reply to the tweet, Grimes distanced herself from the controversy, writing: “While I deeply respect your concern – it is unhealthy that people are this upset when I have not even been online yet today and am only just learning about this controversy now. I don’t know what happened and I will not make a rash statement.”

She continued: “It’s absurd that someone can be this cancelled for something their ex did before they even heard it happened. I am not him. I will not make a statement every time he does something. I can only send love back into a world that is hurting.”

Asked by another user to clarify her political position, Grimes added: “I’m happy to denounce Nazi-ism – and the far alt right. Would that help clear things up?”

She added: “I’ve just gotten out of breakfast and have to catch a flight, and am still debating how to approach things diplomatically because I feel in over my head. But if there’s concern about that, I am happy to set the record strait [sic] in a meaningful way. If I don’t respond for another 5 hrs it’s cus there’s no wifi on my flight.”https://www.msn.com/en-us/video/news/elon-musk-salutes-during-trump-inauguration-speech/vi-AA1xxvKy?ocid=socialshare&t=26

Musk himself has responded to the controversy, but did not outright deny that he was emulating a fascist salute when he twice shot his right arm in an angular direction with the palm facing down. Instead, he said his critics needed “better dirty tricks” because attacking their political opponents as Adolf Hitler is “sooo tired.”

Historians of fascism and neo-Nazism have also weighed in following Musk’s speech, saying that they believed Musk’s gesture was a “sieg heil” and that viewers “should believe your eyes.” Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a history professor at New York University, added: “Historian of fascism here. It was a Nazi salute and a very belligerent one too.”https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/violence-erupts-in-the-west-bank-just-hours-after-trump-took-office/vi-AA1xCYru?ocid=socialshare
